Narrative:
Captain's leg; in left downwind; plan was to fly a visual backed up by FMS. Planned on turning base and flying north of the mesa the VOR is built on to intercept final/approach path. Tower instructed us to turn base earlier than planned; I did via heading mode on ap (autopilot); in the turn I disconnected the ap kept the mesa in my scan along with the runway. Overflew northern edge of the mesa setting of the terrain warning then the 'pull up.' both of us could clearly see the terrain and that our flight path was clear of it prior to overflying the mesa and during the GPWS event.turning earlier than planned to comply with ATC request/instruction versus planned flight path to avoid setting off GPWS system that operated as expected.notify ATC of intended flight path; perhaps a note on company airport reference page regarding a left base for runway 14 that flight paths overflying the mesa may set off GPWS caution or alerts.
