Narrative:

On an IFR flight plan at FL230 an alternator failure occurred. Upon noticing the failure, I notified ATC about the problem and requested landing at the nearest airport (pia). I decided upon a fast descent so as not to deplete the battery. During the descent the wind shield fogged up rapidly because of the sudden temperature change. Landing and rollout were fine. Upon leaving the runway and taxiing on the taxiway, I inadvertently taxied off the taxiway into soft ground, causing the nose gear to sink and the propeller to strike a cement manhole cover. The next day the FAA came to investigate and told me it would be written up as an incident. I am not sure if I did anything wrong, which is why I am filing this report.

Title: AFTER ALTERNATOR FAILURE AT NIGHT IN CRUISE AND DIVERSION TO A PRECAUTIONARY LNDG AT PIA, PLT EXPERIENCES TXWY EXCURSION AND PROPELLER STRIKE.

Narrative: ON AN IFR FLT PLAN AT FL230 AN ALTERNATOR FAILURE OCCURRED. UPON NOTICING THE FAILURE, I NOTIFIED ATC ABOUT THE PROB AND REQUESTED LNDG AT THE NEAREST ARPT (PIA). I DECIDED UPON A FAST DSNT SO AS NOT TO DEPLETE THE BATTERY. DURING THE DSNT THE WIND SHIELD FOGGED UP RAPIDLY BECAUSE OF THE SUDDEN TEMP CHANGE. LNDG AND ROLLOUT WERE FINE. UPON LEAVING THE RWY AND TAXIING ON THE TXWY, I INADVERTENTLY TAXIED OFF THE TXWY INTO SOFT GND, CAUSING THE NOSE GEAR TO SINK AND THE PROP TO STRIKE A CEMENT MANHOLE COVER. THE NEXT DAY THE FAA CAME TO INVESTIGATE AND TOLD ME IT WOULD BE WRITTEN UP AS AN INCIDENT. I AM NOT SURE IF I DID ANYTHING WRONG, WHICH IS WHY I AM FILING THIS RPT.
