Narrative:
Inflight; [we received a] non-normal EICAS caution message parking brake not released annunciation during cruise. [We] complied with all non-normal procedures; but no change/EICAS message remained. [We] coordinated with dispatch/maintenance control regarding the issue and came to agreement that the safest course of action would be a diversion. [We contacted] ATC; briefed the flight attendants and passengers; then completed the precautionary landing.[the landing was] uneventful; not overweight; and no aircraft control issues during the roll out/complete stop on the runway. Coordinated with arff (aircraft rescue and firefighting) to inspect aircraft; no damage [was] noted. [We] taxied clear of the runway to the gate; deplaned via passenger service and handed aircraft over to local maintenance following conference call with dispatch/maintenance control. Aml entry made and dispatch/maintenance control briefed regarding the aircraft condition.
