Narrative:

I was acting as IOE check airman in the right set with a new captain in the left seat. While inbound to clt from iso, wh had just passed the fay VOR and were joining the chesterfield 3 arrival to clt, as filed. I misread the right off of fay. (I tuned in the 312 degree right as depicted off of flo, instead of the 258 degree right off of fay). The fay controller called us some mins after passing the fay VOR and gave us a heading away from restr area 5311. I am not sure if we actually entered into the restr area. Then I asked for a heading to rejoin the chesterfield arrival. The fay controller responded by saying something to the effect of we weren't cleared to join the arrival anyway, that we were assigned V-56 after fay, to trock intersection, direct to chesterfield, and then the arrival. To the best of my memory, that was the first time I had heard of a new routing. We eventually got squared away and proceeded west/O further incident. The purpose of IOE (initial operating experience) is to get a new person, a new captain in this case, accustomed to his new position. There is a strong emphasis on doing things correctly, by the book, and assuring that the new person will continue to operate by the book after completion of IOE. In that atmosphere of stressing extra diligence, I screwed up and navigated us towards a restr area, and this new captain allowed me to direct him there. How basic is 'tune and identify'? I have no explanation for the rerouting after our initial mistake over the fay right. We heard no instructions about a rerte until after we joined the wrong arrival right.

Title: COMMUTER LTTTRACK HEADING DEVIATION CAUSING PROBABLE UNAUTH PENETRATION OF RESTRICTED AREA.

Narrative: I WAS ACTING AS IOE CHK AIRMAN IN THE R SET WITH A NEW CAPT IN THE L SEAT. WHILE INBND TO CLT FROM ISO, WH HAD JUST PASSED THE FAY VOR AND WERE JOINING THE CHESTERFIELD 3 ARR TO CLT, AS FILED. I MISREAD THE R OFF OF FAY. (I TUNED IN THE 312 DEG R AS DEPICTED OFF OF FLO, INSTEAD OF THE 258 DEG R OFF OF FAY). THE FAY CTLR CALLED US SOME MINS AFTER PASSING THE FAY VOR AND GAVE US A HDG AWAY FROM RESTR AREA 5311. I AM NOT SURE IF WE ACTUALLY ENTERED INTO THE RESTR AREA. THEN I ASKED FOR A HDG TO REJOIN THE CHESTERFIELD ARR. THE FAY CTLR RESPONDED BY SAYING SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT OF WE WEREN'T CLRED TO JOIN THE ARR ANYWAY, THAT WE WERE ASSIGNED V-56 AFTER FAY, TO TROCK INTXN, DIRECT TO CHESTERFIELD, AND THEN THE ARR. TO THE BEST OF MY MEMORY, THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAD HEARD OF A NEW RTING. WE EVENTUALLY GOT SQUARED AWAY AND PROCEEDED W/O FURTHER INCIDENT. THE PURPOSE OF IOE (INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE) IS TO GET A NEW PERSON, A NEW CAPT IN THIS CASE, ACCUSTOMED TO HIS NEW POS. THERE IS A STRONG EMPHASIS ON DOING THINGS CORRECTLY, BY THE BOOK, AND ASSURING THAT THE NEW PERSON WILL CONTINUE TO OPERATE BY THE BOOK AFTER COMPLETION OF IOE. IN THAT ATMOSPHERE OF STRESSING EXTRA DILIGENCE, I SCREWED UP AND NAVIGATED US TOWARDS A RESTR AREA, AND THIS NEW CAPT ALLOWED ME TO DIRECT HIM THERE. HOW BASIC IS 'TUNE AND IDENT'? I HAVE NO EXPLANATION FOR THE REROUTING AFTER OUR INITIAL MISTAKE OVER THE FAY R. WE HEARD NO INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT A RERTE UNTIL AFTER WE JOINED THE WRONG ARR R.
