Narrative:
Aircraft #1 was an light transport requesting FL380. After #1 was climbed to FL390 and was proceeding direct sax VOR, on an approximately 240 degree heading. Aircraft #2, and large transport, was requesting FL390 on J75 swbnd. Since there was traffic on J75 at FL350, aircraft #2 was vectored on a 280 degree heading for climb. This heading placed aircraft #2 north of aircraft #1. Aircraft #2 was then vectored to an 190 degree heading in order to cross behind aircraft #1 and to intercept J75 again. This heading was not sufficient to cross 5 NM behind aircraft #1 due to the difference in the turbojet's airspeed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ARTCC RADAR CTLR WAS VECTORING AN ACFT TO REQUESTED ALT AND AS A TURN WAS ISSUED TO PLACE THE ACFT BACK ON COURSE IT PASSED BEHIND ANOTHER ACFT WITH LESS THAN STANDARD SEPARATION.
Narrative: ACFT #1 WAS AN LTT REQUESTING FL380. AFTER #1 WAS CLBED TO FL390 AND WAS PROCEEDING DIRECT SAX VOR, ON AN APPROX 240 DEG HDG. ACFT #2, AND LGT, WAS REQUESTING FL390 ON J75 SWBND. SINCE THERE WAS TFC ON J75 AT FL350, ACFT #2 WAS VECTORED ON A 280 DEG HDG FOR CLB. THIS HDG PLACED ACFT #2 N OF ACFT #1. ACFT #2 WAS THEN VECTORED TO AN 190 DEG HDG IN ORDER TO CROSS BEHIND ACFT #1 AND TO INTERCEPT J75 AGAIN. THIS HDG WAS NOT SUFFICIENT TO CROSS 5 NM BEHIND ACFT #1 DUE TO THE DIFFERENCE IN THE TURBOJET'S AIRSPD.
