Narrative:

On approach to runway 22L in newark; during radar vectoring under the control of new york approach; we experienced a TCAS/RA while in level flight at 5000 feet MSL. I was the pilot flying at the time; so I immediately disconnected the autopilot; and began a climbing escape maneuver to 5300 feet MSL; before descending back to 5000 feet MSL; after the intruder aircraft has passed 300 feet below our left wing. My first officer advised ATC; and we continued without any further incident to a safe landing at newark airport.
