Narrative:
Became ill approximately 10 mins prior to scheduled departure time. A pass riding captain (current and qualified on same type aircraft) assumed control of the aircraft. After landing I left the aircraft and spent approximately 30 mins in toilet being sick and incapacitated. I departed airport and drove home, then reported the illness and the name of other captain flying the aircraft to the company. No incident during taxi, flight or taxi occurred or reported. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter contacted for clarification of narrative. Reporter indicated that the dead-heading captain, both a neighbor and a personal friend, took over the flight before departure on the bos-lga flight with the knowledge and concurrence of the company. The reporter left the aircraft before departure at bos and went home. Reporter indicated he felt fine a few hours later, and neither the company nor his personal physician were able to determine the nature of the illness with any certainty. The reporter does suffer from infrequent recurrence of amoebic dysentery contacted overseas in about 1968, and he feels that this may have been the cause of this problem, although he does not discount the possibility of food poisoning from a tainted airline meal or a rapid and short duration onset of the flu. Regardless of the source of the problem, the reporter is back on active status with no aftereffects.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR CAPT GETS SICK BEFORE FLT, GOES HOME.
Narrative: BECAME ILL APPROX 10 MINS PRIOR TO SCHEDULED DEP TIME. A PASS RIDING CAPT (CURRENT AND QUALIFIED ON SAME TYPE ACFT) ASSUMED CTL OF THE ACFT. AFTER LNDG I LEFT THE ACFT AND SPENT APPROX 30 MINS IN TOILET BEING SICK AND INCAPACITATED. I DEPARTED ARPT AND DROVE HOME, THEN RPTED THE ILLNESS AND THE NAME OF OTHER CAPT FLYING THE ACFT TO THE COMPANY. NO INCIDENT DURING TAXI, FLT OR TAXI OCCURRED OR RPTED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR CONTACTED FOR CLARIFICATION OF NARRATIVE. RPTR INDICATED THAT THE DEAD-HEADING CAPT, BOTH A NEIGHBOR AND A PERSONAL FRIEND, TOOK OVER THE FLT BEFORE DEP ON THE BOS-LGA FLT WITH THE KNOWLEDGE AND CONCURRENCE OF THE COMPANY. THE RPTR LEFT THE ACFT BEFORE DEP AT BOS AND WENT HOME. RPTR INDICATED HE FELT FINE A FEW HRS LATER, AND NEITHER THE COMPANY NOR HIS PERSONAL PHYSICIAN WERE ABLE TO DETERMINE THE NATURE OF THE ILLNESS WITH ANY CERTAINTY. THE RPTR DOES SUFFER FROM INFREQUENT RECURRENCE OF AMOEBIC DYSENTERY CONTACTED OVERSEAS IN ABOUT 1968, AND HE FEELS THAT THIS MAY HAVE BEEN THE CAUSE OF THIS PROB, ALTHOUGH HE DOES NOT DISCOUNT THE POSSIBILITY OF FOOD POISONING FROM A TAINTED AIRLINE MEAL OR A RAPID AND SHORT DURATION ONSET OF THE FLU. REGARDLESS OF THE SOURCE OF THE PROB, THE RPTR IS BACK ON ACTIVE STATUS WITH NO AFTEREFFECTS.
