Narrative:
Medium large transport was in level cruise flight at FL330 approximately 45 NM southeast of bna VORTAC. Autoplt was engaged. A power loss on the right engine occurred. The engine continued to decelerate. Throttle movement had no effect on engine operation. The decision was made to divert to bna and ATC was notified of the emergency. As the engine failure/shutdown procedure was in progress, engine power was restored. All engine indications and systems returned to normal. At this time the aircraft was at FL290. Company dispatcher was advised of previous problem and present corrected condition. Joint captain/dispatcher decision was made to divert to atl, atl being more desirable due to pilot's familiarization with airport. Atl NOTAMS and WX reports were on board the aircraft. (Atl: clear 25, wind 2910.) ATC was notified that normal engine power was restored and that the emergency condition no longer existed. Clearance was requested and received to proceed to and land at atl. The right engine operated normally for the remainder of the flight, which proceeded to atl with no additional problems.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG TEMPORARY LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AT FL330. POWER RESTORED AFTER DESCENT TO FL290.
Narrative: MLG WAS IN LEVEL CRUISE FLT AT FL330 APPROX 45 NM SE OF BNA VORTAC. AUTOPLT WAS ENGAGED. A PWR LOSS ON THE RIGHT ENG OCCURRED. THE ENG CONTINUED TO DECELERATE. THROTTLE MOVEMENT HAD NO EFFECT ON ENG OPERATION. THE DECISION WAS MADE TO DIVERT TO BNA AND ATC WAS NOTIFIED OF THE EMER. AS THE ENG FAILURE/SHUTDOWN PROC WAS IN PROGRESS, ENG PWR WAS RESTORED. ALL ENG INDICATIONS AND SYSTEMS RETURNED TO NORMAL. AT THIS TIME THE ACFT WAS AT FL290. COMPANY DISPATCHER WAS ADVISED OF PREVIOUS PROB AND PRESENT CORRECTED CONDITION. JOINT CAPT/DISPATCHER DECISION WAS MADE TO DIVERT TO ATL, ATL BEING MORE DESIRABLE DUE TO PLT'S FAMILIARIZATION WITH ARPT. ATL NOTAMS AND WX RPTS WERE ON BOARD THE ACFT. (ATL: CLR 25, WIND 2910.) ATC WAS NOTIFIED THAT NORMAL ENG PWR WAS RESTORED AND THAT THE EMER CONDITION NO LONGER EXISTED. CLRNC WAS REQUESTED AND RECEIVED TO PROCEED TO AND LAND AT ATL. THE RIGHT ENG OPERATED NORMALLY FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT, WHICH PROCEEDED TO ATL WITH NO ADDITIONAL PROBS.
