Narrative:
Should have received the above clearance issued by ATC which we later discovered after communications were reestablished with ATC. We discovered the problem when we could only hear a light aircraft talking to center and he was trying to call our flight. We could hear him sometimes but he could not hear us when we tried to transmit to him. We switched to #2 VHF communication and established communication on the #2 radio. We were off the air for no more than 1 min. Center informed us to fly heading of 360. We responded with a readback and he said to standby as he was on the telephone. Center then came on and said we were not to have started the turn until out of 12000 ft to intercept the airway!
