Narrative:
On a routine pleasure flight from vandenberg (X16) to venice (vnc) I was informed by tampa approach that the WX in the venice area was showing rain showers and the only way to venice would be to make a northwest approach. I asked for persmission to go through the sarasota arsa to the coast. Just south of sarasota I encountered a rain shower, I thought it was only a localized rain cell and that I would be in it for a few seconds. The rain shower turned into a heavy rain. At that time I was unable to maintain any altitude given by approach. Approach advised that I do a 180 degree and land at sarasota which was VFR. Assisted by approach, I was given headings to sarasota and landed. Upon further evaluation of the problem, it was discovered by an a and I that I had an inoperative right magnetic. I am now in the process of having this magnetic replaced.

Title: SMA PLT GETS FLT ASSIST AFTER TSTM ACTIVITY CREATES LOSS OF ACFT CTL AND LANDS AT NEAREST SUITABLE ARPT.
Narrative: ON A ROUTINE PLEASURE FLT FROM VANDENBERG (X16) TO VENICE (VNC) I WAS INFORMED BY TAMPA APCH THAT THE WX IN THE VENICE AREA WAS SHOWING RAIN SHOWERS AND THE ONLY WAY TO VENICE WOULD BE TO MAKE A NW APCH. I ASKED FOR PERSMISSION TO GO THROUGH THE SARASOTA ARSA TO THE COAST. JUST S OF SARASOTA I ENCOUNTERED A RAIN SHOWER, I THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY A LOCALIZED RAIN CELL AND THAT I WOULD BE IN IT FOR A FEW SECS. THE RAIN SHOWER TURNED INTO A HVY RAIN. AT THAT TIME I WAS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN ANY ALT GIVEN BY APCH. APCH ADVISED THAT I DO A 180 DEG AND LAND AT SARASOTA WHICH WAS VFR. ASSISTED BY APCH, I WAS GIVEN HDGS TO SARASOTA AND LANDED. UPON FURTHER EVALUATION OF THE PROB, IT WAS DISCOVERED BY AN A AND I THAT I HAD AN INOPERATIVE R MAG. I AM NOW IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING THIS MAG REPLACED.
