Narrative:
While installing a shimmy dampener on an medium large transport landing gear a mounting bracket was inadvertently installed improperly causing the aircraft to have a landing gear fault indication after takeoff. Contributing factor. Mfr's maintenance manual does not show proper part positioning.

Title: REPORTERS CITE INACCURATE MAINTENANCE MANUAL AS CAUSE FOR IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF SHIMY DAMPNER ON MLG WHICH RESULTED IN AN INCOMPLETED GEAR RETRACTION. ACFT RETURN LAND.
Narrative: WHILE INSTALLING A SHIMMY DAMPENER ON AN MLG LNDG GEAR A MOUNTING BRACKET WAS INADVERTENTLY INSTALLED IMPROPERLY CAUSING THE ACFT TO HAVE A LNDG GEAR FAULT INDICATION AFTER TKOF. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. MFR'S MAINT MANUAL DOES NOT SHOW PROPER PART POSITIONING.
