Narrative:
After landing from an uneventful flight from savannah, GA I neglected to close my VFR flight plan with st. Petersburg FSS. I fly to offshore platforms out of savannah and file up to 3 separate flight plans/day and have not had a problem until this one. Although I realize that I, as PIC, am totally responsible to close flight plan I am curious why no one contacted orl TCA or orl tower to ask if I had arrived before going into search procedures. To land I had to talk to approach and tower, plus I called 'down and clear' to tower upon landing at ramp. Upon my arrival at home I received a call from my chief pilot that st. Petersburg FSS was searching for me. At this time I called immediately and closed flight plan. Time upon landing was XX00 eastern. I called and cancelled flight plan 1 1/2 hours later. This was an honest mistake on my part. Contributing to this is the fact that for the past 12 months 8/89-8/90 I have been flying a jet on IFR flight plans and am used to automatic cancellation.
