Narrative:
In 10/90, while conducting a training flight in small aircraft twin, the #1 communication radio malfunctioned and according to the controller we violated the air traffic area of hill AFB. After departing slc, we contacted departure control on frequency 120.90 #1 communication radio we asked to be cleared VFR to practice the brigham city NDB 34 approach. The controller cleared us east of I-15 north to lagoon park, westbound following the shoreline of great salt lake until abeam freeport center, then direct to ogden VOR to begin the approach. We were cleared for the approach. Prior to reaching lagoon, the controller told us to contact slc departure on frequency 121.10, which we did no #1 communication radio placing #2 communication on the previous frequency of 120.90. The second controller on 121.10 cleared us abeam freeport center to the VOR at ogden and cleared us for the NDB 34 approach to brigham city. The #1 communication radio malfunctioned after our clearance for the approach. As we were also listening on frequency 120.90 we were unaware of the malfunction. We changed #2 radio to brigham city unicom 122.80 to announce our position. Not hearing departure control any longer we then tuned #2 radio to frequency 121.10 to report missed approach. The controller informed us he had tried contacting us for 30 mi. He also informed us we violated hill AFB air traffic area airspace. We told him that the #1 radio must have malfunctioned. I feel that since the controller cleared us direct to ogd VOR once abeam the freeport center we did not violate the airspace. The clearance we received prior to radio malfunction was the last communication we acknowledged and did as told. The controller might give specific radials to track to prevent the problem in the future. The radio is being looked at also.

Title: GA SMA RADIO COM PROBLEM AND ALLEGED UNAUTH PENETRATION OF HIF ATA.
Narrative: IN 10/90, WHILE CONDUCTING A TRNING FLT IN SMA TWIN, THE #1 COM RADIO MALFUNCTIONED AND ACCORDING TO THE CTLR WE VIOLATED THE ATA OF HILL AFB. AFTER DEPARTING SLC, WE CONTACTED DEP CTL ON FREQ 120.90 #1 COM RADIO WE ASKED TO BE CLRED VFR TO PRACTICE THE BRIGHAM CITY NDB 34 APCH. THE CTLR CLRED US E OF I-15 N TO LAGOON PARK, WBND FOLLOWING THE SHORELINE OF GREAT SALT LAKE UNTIL ABEAM FREEPORT CENTER, THEN DIRECT TO OGDEN VOR TO BEGIN THE APCH. WE WERE CLRED FOR THE APCH. PRIOR TO REACHING LAGOON, THE CTLR TOLD US TO CONTACT SLC DEP ON FREQ 121.10, WHICH WE DID NO #1 COM RADIO PLACING #2 COM ON THE PREVIOUS FREQ OF 120.90. THE SECOND CTLR ON 121.10 CLRED US ABEAM FREEPORT CENTER TO THE VOR AT OGDEN AND CLRED US FOR THE NDB 34 APCH TO BRIGHAM CITY. THE #1 COM RADIO MALFUNCTIONED AFTER OUR CLRNC FOR THE APCH. AS WE WERE ALSO LISTENING ON FREQ 120.90 WE WERE UNAWARE OF THE MALFUNCTION. WE CHANGED #2 RADIO TO BRIGHAM CITY UNICOM 122.80 TO ANNOUNCE OUR POS. NOT HEARING DEP CTL ANY LONGER WE THEN TUNED #2 RADIO TO FREQ 121.10 TO RPT MISSED APCH. THE CTLR INFORMED US HE HAD TRIED CONTACTING US FOR 30 MI. HE ALSO INFORMED US WE VIOLATED HILL AFB ATA AIRSPACE. WE TOLD HIM THAT THE #1 RADIO MUST HAVE MALFUNCTIONED. I FEEL THAT SINCE THE CTLR CLRED US DIRECT TO OGD VOR ONCE ABEAM THE FREEPORT CENTER WE DID NOT VIOLATE THE AIRSPACE. THE CLRNC WE RECEIVED PRIOR TO RADIO MALFUNCTION WAS THE LAST COM WE ACKNOWLEDGED AND DID AS TOLD. THE CTLR MIGHT GIVE SPECIFIC RADIALS TO TRACK TO PREVENT THE PROB IN THE FUTURE. THE RADIO IS BEING LOOKED AT ALSO.
