Narrative:
Returning to base following my aerial survey mission. Experienced dramatic engine surging. Performed trouble shooting tasks and emergency checklist items. With no change to engine condition. Attempted off airport landing on field. Struck hidden cable. Aircraft pitched up during recovery aircraft regained some power. Attempted to find better landing area. Climbed to altitude and engine began surging again. Landed on paved ranch runway. Light aircraft damage from cable strike.
