Narrative:
We were waiting for takeoff on runway 23L at intersection south. The northeast 1900' of the runway was under construction. We were holding southwest on the inner parallel to the left behind another aircraft. There were many aircraft holding for the same runway on taxiway J. Our radio was tuned to ground control 121.7. Ground control cleared us to taxi around the aircraft in front of us and into position and hold on the runway. We were not instructed to contact tower although we should have. I believe we both thought we were on the tower frequency since they cleared us into position to hold on the runway. We held on the runway for 3 mins before tower figured out we were still on ground frequency. The problem: I don't believe a problem occurred other than aggravated patience. It could have been avoided with proper communications since ground normally does not clear you onto a runway for takeoff. I.e., contact tower prior to taking the runway.

Title: ACR WAS ISSUED TAXI INSTRUCTIONS BY GND CTL INTO POSITION AND HOLD APPARENTLY WITHOUT LCL CTLR'S KNOWLEDGE.
Narrative: WE WERE WAITING FOR TKOF ON RWY 23L AT INTXN S. THE NE 1900' OF THE RWY WAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. WE WERE HOLDING SW ON THE INNER PARALLEL TO THE LEFT BEHIND ANOTHER ACFT. THERE WERE MANY ACFT HOLDING FOR THE SAME RWY ON TXWY J. OUR RADIO WAS TUNED TO GND CTL 121.7. GND CTL CLRED US TO TAXI AROUND THE ACFT IN FRONT OF US AND INTO POS AND HOLD ON THE RWY. WE WERE NOT INSTRUCTED TO CONTACT TWR ALTHOUGH WE SHOULD HAVE. I BELIEVE WE BOTH THOUGHT WE WERE ON THE TWR FREQ SINCE THEY CLRED US INTO POS TO HOLD ON THE RWY. WE HELD ON THE RWY FOR 3 MINS BEFORE TWR FIGURED OUT WE WERE STILL ON GND FREQ. THE PROB: I DON'T BELIEVE A PROB OCCURRED OTHER THAN AGGRAVATED PATIENCE. IT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED WITH PROPER COMS SINCE GND NORMALLY DOES NOT CLR YOU ONTO A RWY FOR TKOF. I.E., CONTACT TWR PRIOR TO TAKING THE RWY.
