Narrative:

After completing my second touch and go, I called crosswind and witnessed an aircraft turn downwind from the 45 degree as well as heard this aircraft call #3. I called and turned downwind at approximately 1800' MSL after having heard an aircraft call 45 for downwind. After calling #3 for downwind, I kept my airspeed at approximately 80 KTS. After reaching pattern altitude, I was extremely concerned as to what the first aircraft on 45 degree would be doing since it was apparent we would collide. He must have slowed down because he barely maneuvered his aircraft behind me. All during this time I heard a radio call for 45 to downwind and a base to final as well as a base call. There was no call from the aircraft behind me as I turned to see how close it was. The landing and taxi light were on and on the left side of the aircraft as well as the indication to me of being larger than my plane. As I turned down I witnessed the plane that was on final was now on short final and called it. Immediately after calling base, I heard another aircraft call base. I was immediately concerned that it was the plane directly behind me. I had a very slow airspeed on base and my descent rate was substantial. As I proceeded to turn final and call it I checked out to my right side and above and saw no one and heard no one until I turned final and heard another base call (extended downwind to base). I was descending rapidly with a 55 KT airspeed with full flaps. The aircraft that had called short final was still on the runway and I wasn't sure if I was going to make a go around or not. Just north of the field I heard an aircraft call a go around and thought it was the plane behind me. I froze on my actions and proceeded to descend. Not much longer than that, I saw a plane approaching from my right behind climbing as it passed through me, my wing was struck from beneath which jolted me left slightly. I waited for the plane on the runway to exit the taxiway but wondering if my controls were still functioning, I tested them and discovered they were ok. I proceeded to descend for a short time before I decided I would not be able to land and that the aircraft that struck me was a sufficient distance away before I executed a go around. We both landed thereafter successfully. At the time he struck me, I thought it was the aircraft behind me, and it was the first question I asked after securing my plane. I can honestly say that the aircraft behind me was too close and thus completely left me wondering if it was him that did the go around. Also before I turned base, the plane on final passed me. To avoid this problem in the future traffic in the pattern and increased emphasis of aircraft identing and avoidance through a more positive visibility scan prior to making turns. An increase in a mutual understand of all aircraft in the pattern to follow a more prescribed pattern. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information. Reporter said that no one was injured. Aircraft damage was very slight. The left horizontal stabilizer of small aircraft Y struck the right wing tip of his aircraft. He is not sure which aircraft he described in his narrative struck him, '...there were a lot of aircraft in the pattern, they all got there at once.'

Title: TWO SMAS HAVE A GLANCING MIDAIR COLLISION ON FINAL APCH TO 1G3.

Narrative: AFTER COMPLETING MY SECOND TOUCH AND GO, I CALLED XWIND AND WITNESSED AN ACFT TURN DOWNWIND FROM THE 45 DEG AS WELL AS HEARD THIS ACFT CALL #3. I CALLED AND TURNED DOWNWIND AT APPROX 1800' MSL AFTER HAVING HEARD AN ACFT CALL 45 FOR DOWNWIND. AFTER CALLING #3 FOR DOWNWIND, I KEPT MY AIRSPD AT APPROX 80 KTS. AFTER REACHING PATTERN ALT, I WAS EXTREMELY CONCERNED AS TO WHAT THE FIRST ACFT ON 45 DEG WOULD BE DOING SINCE IT WAS APPARENT WE WOULD COLLIDE. HE MUST HAVE SLOWED DOWN BECAUSE HE BARELY MANEUVERED HIS ACFT BEHIND ME. ALL DURING THIS TIME I HEARD A RADIO CALL FOR 45 TO DOWNWIND AND A BASE TO FINAL AS WELL AS A BASE CALL. THERE WAS NO CALL FROM THE ACFT BEHIND ME AS I TURNED TO SEE HOW CLOSE IT WAS. THE LNDG AND TAXI LIGHT WERE ON AND ON THE L SIDE OF THE ACFT AS WELL AS THE INDICATION TO ME OF BEING LARGER THAN MY PLANE. AS I TURNED DOWN I WITNESSED THE PLANE THAT WAS ON FINAL WAS NOW ON SHORT FINAL AND CALLED IT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER CALLING BASE, I HEARD ANOTHER ACFT CALL BASE. I WAS IMMEDIATELY CONCERNED THAT IT WAS THE PLANE DIRECTLY BEHIND ME. I HAD A VERY SLOW AIRSPD ON BASE AND MY DSNT RATE WAS SUBSTANTIAL. AS I PROCEEDED TO TURN FINAL AND CALL IT I CHKED OUT TO MY R SIDE AND ABOVE AND SAW NO ONE AND HEARD NO ONE UNTIL I TURNED FINAL AND HEARD ANOTHER BASE CALL (EXTENDED DOWNWIND TO BASE). I WAS DSNDING RAPIDLY WITH A 55 KT AIRSPD WITH FULL FLAPS. THE ACFT THAT HAD CALLED SHORT FINAL WAS STILL ON THE RWY AND I WASN'T SURE IF I WAS GOING TO MAKE A GO AROUND OR NOT. JUST N OF THE FIELD I HEARD AN ACFT CALL A GO AROUND AND THOUGHT IT WAS THE PLANE BEHIND ME. I FROZE ON MY ACTIONS AND PROCEEDED TO DSND. NOT MUCH LONGER THAN THAT, I SAW A PLANE APCHING FROM MY R BEHIND CLBING AS IT PASSED THROUGH ME, MY WING WAS STRUCK FROM BENEATH WHICH JOLTED ME L SLIGHTLY. I WAITED FOR THE PLANE ON THE RWY TO EXIT THE TXWY BUT WONDERING IF MY CTLS WERE STILL FUNCTIONING, I TESTED THEM AND DISCOVERED THEY WERE OK. I PROCEEDED TO DSND FOR A SHORT TIME BEFORE I DECIDED I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO LAND AND THAT THE ACFT THAT STRUCK ME WAS A SUFFICIENT DISTANCE AWAY BEFORE I EXECUTED A GO AROUND. WE BOTH LANDED THEREAFTER SUCCESSFULLY. AT THE TIME HE STRUCK ME, I THOUGHT IT WAS THE ACFT BEHIND ME, AND IT WAS THE FIRST QUESTION I ASKED AFTER SECURING MY PLANE. I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT THE ACFT BEHIND ME WAS TOO CLOSE AND THUS COMPLETELY LEFT ME WONDERING IF IT WAS HIM THAT DID THE GO AROUND. ALSO BEFORE I TURNED BASE, THE PLANE ON FINAL PASSED ME. TO AVOID THIS PROB IN THE FUTURE TFC IN THE PATTERN AND INCREASED EMPHASIS OF ACFT IDENTING AND AVOIDANCE THROUGH A MORE POSITIVE VIS SCAN PRIOR TO MAKING TURNS. AN INCREASE IN A MUTUAL UNDERSTAND OF ALL ACFT IN THE PATTERN TO FOLLOW A MORE PRESCRIBED PATTERN. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. RPTR SAID THAT NO ONE WAS INJURED. ACFT DAMAGE WAS VERY SLIGHT. THE L HORIZ STABILIZER OF SMA Y STRUCK THE R WING TIP OF HIS ACFT. HE IS NOT SURE WHICH ACFT HE DESCRIBED IN HIS NARRATIVE STRUCK HIM, '...THERE WERE A LOT OF ACFT IN THE PATTERN, THEY ALL GOT THERE AT ONCE.'
