Narrative:

Departing sju to st croix virgin islands in a normal climb, heading 075 degrees, at 1000' MSL, autoplt engaged. Approximately 7-10 mi out and approximately 2200' MSL departure control vectored 120 degree heading. Using the heading knob 120 degrees was selected with no response (heading bug was reset for second time and no response). At this time the autoplt was disconnected manually and immediately the aircraft took drastic turn to the left and nose down. At this time the autoplt was reset but nothing happened. The autoplt circuit breaker's were manually popped out. The aileron trim was activated manually with no response. At this moment the first officer and I using manual power recovered aircraft control. Emergency landing was made.

Title: FLT CREW LOST CTL OF COMMUTER MDT DURING CLIMBOUT FROM SJU. RETURN LAND.

Narrative: DEPARTING SJU TO ST CROIX VIRGIN ISLANDS IN A NORMAL CLB, HDG 075 DEGS, AT 1000' MSL, AUTOPLT ENGAGED. APPROX 7-10 MI OUT AND APPROX 2200' MSL DEP CTL VECTORED 120 DEG HDG. USING THE HDG KNOB 120 DEGS WAS SELECTED WITH NO RESPONSE (HDG BUG WAS RESET FOR SECOND TIME AND NO RESPONSE). AT THIS TIME THE AUTOPLT WAS DISCONNECTED MANUALLY AND IMMEDIATELY THE ACFT TOOK DRASTIC TURN TO THE LEFT AND NOSE DOWN. AT THIS TIME THE AUTOPLT WAS RESET BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. THE AUTOPLT CB'S WERE MANUALLY POPPED OUT. THE AILERON TRIM WAS ACTIVATED MANUALLY WITH NO RESPONSE. AT THIS MOMENT THE F/O AND I USING MANUAL PWR RECOVERED ACFT CTL. EMER LNDG WAS MADE.
