Narrative:

Captain showed up at the airplane the same time as the passengers. Then he got in a hurry and skipped over setting his altimeter when the checklist was read. This made him around 500' off his altitude when he leveled off at 8000'. Departure called and said mode C indicated we was high and gave us a new altimeter setting. This probably could have been avoided if he would show up at the airport earlier.
