Narrative:

I departed abi on an IFR to ft scott, ks. Upon reaching 4000' the aircraft rolled right and left and the artificial horizon spun. Upon recovering the aircraft the right-hand door came off in an unusual attitude. The airspeed reached 190 mph and rate of descent 3000-4000 FPM. I recovered the aircraft level above 2500' and returned to the airport. No injuries or other problems. The aircraft was an small transport. Upon departure I am sure the handle was down, but I don't believe the lock pins were engaged.
