Narrative:
While taxiing out of the clt terminal ramp, ground control gave us a clearance that was different than following the outbnd flow of the other aircraft. We heard what we expected to hear and misunderstood a clearance to taxi across a taxiway behind another aircraft as a clearance to taxi across a runway behind the other aircraft. As a result, we taxied across an inactive runway west/O a clearance. Supplemental information from acn 163053: contributing factors was failure of both crew members to delay checklists until across all runways en route to active departure runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MLG TAXIED ACROSS INACTIVE RWY WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING OUT OF THE CLT TERMINAL RAMP, GND CTL GAVE US A CLRNC THAT WAS DIFFERENT THAN FOLLOWING THE OUTBND FLOW OF THE OTHER ACFT. WE HEARD WHAT WE EXPECTED TO HEAR AND MISUNDERSTOOD A CLRNC TO TAXI ACROSS A TXWY BEHIND ANOTHER ACFT AS A CLRNC TO TAXI ACROSS A RWY BEHIND THE OTHER ACFT. AS A RESULT, WE TAXIED ACROSS AN INACTIVE RWY W/O A CLRNC. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 163053: CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WAS FAILURE OF BOTH CREW MEMBERS TO DELAY CHKLISTS UNTIL ACROSS ALL RWYS ENRTE TO ACTIVE DEP RWY.
