Narrative:
Center gave us a clearance to cross bison intersection on the denver 213 degree right 36 DME fix at 16000'. At that time, we were approximately on the 215 degree right 90 mi out. To avoid turbulence, I decided not to descend until 75 DME. At about 80 DME, the controller told us to descend to FL230. Upon reaching, my first officer asked if I would like to continue the descent. I said yes. He told the controller we were continuing down for 16000' MSL at bison. The controller then told us we were supposed to be at FL230. I immediately climbed back to FL230 from approximately 22500' MSL and told the controller we thought we were supposed to cross bison at 16000'. He said no sir I told you to expect that. I informed him we read back the clearance as that we were supposed to cross bison at 16000' MSL. He then said I might have made a miscom. About 2-3 mins later, he gave me a phone number to call saying we had a possible altitude violation.

Title: FLT CREW OF LTT BELIEVED THEY WERE CLEARED TO DESCEND TO 16000' CROSSING AT BISON ON APCH TO DEN. CLRNC ALLEGEDLY WAS TO PLAN ON CROSSING BISON OR EXPECT CROSSING BISON AT 16000'.
Narrative: CTR GAVE US A CLRNC TO CROSS BISON INTXN ON THE DENVER 213 DEG R 36 DME FIX AT 16000'. AT THAT TIME, WE WERE APPROX ON THE 215 DEG R 90 MI OUT. TO AVOID TURB, I DECIDED NOT TO DSND UNTIL 75 DME. AT ABOUT 80 DME, THE CTLR TOLD US TO DSND TO FL230. UPON REACHING, MY F/O ASKED IF I WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE THE DSNT. I SAID YES. HE TOLD THE CTLR WE WERE CONTINUING DOWN FOR 16000' MSL AT BISON. THE CTLR THEN TOLD US WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE AT FL230. I IMMEDIATELY CLBED BACK TO FL230 FROM APPROX 22500' MSL AND TOLD THE CTLR WE THOUGHT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO CROSS BISON AT 16000'. HE SAID NO SIR I TOLD YOU TO EXPECT THAT. I INFORMED HIM WE READ BACK THE CLRNC AS THAT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO CROSS BISON AT 16000' MSL. HE THEN SAID I MIGHT HAVE MADE A MISCOM. ABOUT 2-3 MINS LATER, HE GAVE ME A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL SAYING WE HAD A POSSIBLE ALT VIOLATION.
