Narrative:
After calling for 'gear down' and the final landing checklist, I noticed that the red unsafe gear light for the nose gear had illuminated with the 3 green safe indications. Flew low approach abeam ewr tower and tower controller said nose gear appeared down. Requested a radar box pattern and instructed first officer to execute abnormal checklist for the unsafe indication. We verified after doing the procedure that the gear was locked in place. Coordinated with approach, company maintenance and ff/a as to the procedures to be used for the approach and landing of the incident. Returning to ewr, declared emergency, given our gear problem and fuel remaining. Proceeded direct to airport. Landed west/O incident. Stopped straight ahead on runway 22L. Company maintenance personnel pinned all gear and towed us to the gear. I made a log book write-up of the event.
