Narrative:
My aircraft is small aircraft. The incident involves a runway incursion whereas I thought I was cleared for takeoff, but wasn't. At no time was there any intentional disregard for safety, far's or control tower authority. The incident was due strictly to communication problems at dupage due to heavy traffic. It is important to note that dupage airport is a very congested VFR airport with 2 runways. There is constantly a mix of VFR and IFR arrs and departures and training aircraft in the pattern causing a heavy workload on the tower. Combined with inexperienced trainees often operating the tower, stress, short tempers, arrogance, sarcasm and unprofessionalism of the tower operators is common. At the time of my incidence, a trnee was controling air traffic with an instrument nearby. My aircraft, was getting ready for takeoff at runway 10 when small aircraft B was cleared for takeoff. Part of the problem was caused by the similarity of the call sign.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF SMA ON TRAINING FLT TOOK TKOF CLRNC DIRECTED TO ANOTHER FLT.
Narrative: MY ACFT IS SMA. THE INCIDENT INVOLVES A RWY INCURSION WHEREAS I THOUGHT I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF, BUT WASN'T. AT NO TIME WAS THERE ANY INTENTIONAL DISREGARD FOR SAFETY, FAR'S OR CTL TWR AUTHORITY. THE INCIDENT WAS DUE STRICTLY TO COM PROBS AT DUPAGE DUE TO HVY TFC. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT DUPAGE ARPT IS A VERY CONGESTED VFR ARPT WITH 2 RWYS. THERE IS CONSTANTLY A MIX OF VFR AND IFR ARRS AND DEPS AND TRNING ACFT IN THE PATTERN CAUSING A HVY WORKLOAD ON THE TWR. COMBINED WITH INEXPERIENCED TRAINEES OFTEN OPERATING THE TWR, STRESS, SHORT TEMPERS, ARROGANCE, SARCASM AND UNPROFESSIONALISM OF THE TWR OPERATORS IS COMMON. AT THE TIME OF MY INCIDENCE, A TRNEE WAS CTLING AIR TFC WITH AN INSTR NEARBY. MY ACFT, WAS GETTING READY FOR TKOF AT RWY 10 WHEN SMA B WAS CLRED FOR TKOF. PART OF THE PROB WAS CAUSED BY THE SIMILARITY OF THE CALL SIGN.
