Narrative:
In cruise at FL280, F/a reported by interphone of an electrical odor in the cabin. At that time the first officer also noticed it. I turned off the galley power immediately and set jan VOR frequency to determine my location. At this time I took control of the aircraft, declared an emergency, my intention to land at jan and started down. The first officer and I donned our O2 masks and initiated the smoke identify/removal checklist. On the descent, after expeditious handling by ZME and jan approach, we landed uneventfully on runway 33L. Since no smoke or fire was reported to the cockpit we taxied to the gate to deplane. Lesson learned: brief the 'who talks to whom' beforehand. By using O2 masks, we had to depend on cockpit speakers: first officer talking to F/a on interphone while running the emergency checklist. I flew and talked to center/approach.
