Narrative:
We had just noticed a failure of our #1 hydraulic system with a complete loss of fluid. We understood lax approach to say, 'cross smo VOR at or below 7000', maintain 5000'.' we crossed smo at 6000'. Lax approach said they cleared us to cross smo at 7000', then descend to 5000'. Several components failed hydraulically, demanding our attention. Perhaps we didn't hear the controller correctly, perhaps we did!
