Narrative:

Engine failure due to broken value. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter and his CFI were on a training mission with the small aircraft. The engine had less than 100 hours since motor overhaul and post-flight inspection showed no maintenance omissions. When the engine quit, a mayday call was issued and a coast guard helicopter answered with a suggestion and offer to spotlight X46 for the aircraft to land, as it was nighttime. A subsequent safe landing was accomplished with the reporter flying and the CFI assisting at the last moment by putting the flaps down.
