Narrative:

Student verified both fuel cells full. Apparently they were not, however fuel gauges showed some fuel, but in about 30 seconds gauges showed empty. Made a precautionary landing in rough terrain. No damage to aircraft or persons or crew. Maintenance decided to flatbed aircraft out of landing area and return to airport school. Instructor should have climbed up on cessna's wing, checked fuel level. Student has considerable flight time and was to be trusted on preflight.
