Narrative:
I was flying from the left seat. I am type rated in the aircraft and ppe current, but do not have captain status with the company. PNF was captain qualified and PIC on flight plan. We had departed lex for roa. Roa was reporting landing minimums, but we missed the approach there (lda-DME with G/south). We held and shot another approach and missed. We proceeded to our alternate (tri) and landed and took on additional fuel and returned to roa for another approach. We missed and proceeded to lyh for an ILS approach WX was reported near minimums. Cockpit workload was high as was stress level. At least from my perspective. ZDC was vectoring us for the ILS approach when a passenger asked about a rental car. The PNF was off frequency talking on unicom when center cleared us for the approach and told us to contact tower. The PNF came back on frequency, but I was unsure of exact instructions re: contacting of tower. The PNF began making xmissions to both center and tower and I focused my attention to shooting an approach to minimums. The PNF reported approach lighting in sight at decision height and we continued to a successful landing. Tower informed us we had not established contact with them and had landed west/O clearance. Corrective actions: 1) do not let passenger requests take precedence over operation or aircraft. 2) PNF should state to the PF that the aircraft is or is not cleared to land (or takeoff) and receive an acknowledgement. 3) simulator training should not be lax re: ATC communication.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CORP ACFT LANDS WITHOUT CLRNC.
Narrative: I WAS FLYING FROM THE LEFT SEAT. I AM TYPE RATED IN THE ACFT AND PPE CURRENT, BUT DO NOT HAVE CAPT STATUS WITH THE COMPANY. PNF WAS CAPT QUALIFIED AND PIC ON FLT PLAN. WE HAD DEPARTED LEX FOR ROA. ROA WAS RPTING LNDG MINIMUMS, BUT WE MISSED THE APCH THERE (LDA-DME WITH G/S). WE HELD AND SHOT ANOTHER APCH AND MISSED. WE PROCEEDED TO OUR ALTERNATE (TRI) AND LANDED AND TOOK ON ADDITIONAL FUEL AND RETURNED TO ROA FOR ANOTHER APCH. WE MISSED AND PROCEEDED TO LYH FOR AN ILS APCH WX WAS RPTED NEAR MINIMUMS. COCKPIT WORKLOAD WAS HIGH AS WAS STRESS LEVEL. AT LEAST FROM MY PERSPECTIVE. ZDC WAS VECTORING US FOR THE ILS APCH WHEN A PAX ASKED ABOUT A RENTAL CAR. THE PNF WAS OFF FREQ TALKING ON UNICOM WHEN CENTER CLRED US FOR THE APCH AND TOLD US TO CONTACT TWR. THE PNF CAME BACK ON FREQ, BUT I WAS UNSURE OF EXACT INSTRUCTIONS RE: CONTACTING OF TWR. THE PNF BEGAN MAKING XMISSIONS TO BOTH CENTER AND TWR AND I FOCUSED MY ATTN TO SHOOTING AN APCH TO MINIMUMS. THE PNF RPTED APCH LIGHTING IN SIGHT AT DECISION HEIGHT AND WE CONTINUED TO A SUCCESSFUL LNDG. TWR INFORMED US WE HAD NOT ESTABLISHED CONTACT WITH THEM AND HAD LANDED W/O CLRNC. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: 1) DO NOT LET PAX REQUESTS TAKE PRECEDENCE OVER OPERATION OR ACFT. 2) PNF SHOULD STATE TO THE PF THAT THE ACFT IS OR IS NOT CLRED TO LAND (OR TKOF) AND RECEIVE AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. 3) SIMULATOR TRNING SHOULD NOT BE LAX RE: ATC COM.
