Narrative:
At 16;000 ft.; smoke [was] observed in cruise flight. Did memory items and smoke removal checklist since we did not know the source of the smoke. [We advised ATC] and continued to ZZZ as it was nearest suitable airport. Flight attendant notified and no cause of evacuation noted as smoke was not in the cabin and no more additional smoke was in the cockpit after checklist completion. Fire trucks requested to follow to the gate. Nothing noticed outside of normal when walk around completed. The cause was unknown to the flight crew.
