Narrative:
Craig ATIS at the time of the approach indicated 700' overcast, visibility 1 1/2 mi in rain. Wind northeast at 5 KTS. Received vectors for VOR 14 into craig field. Crossed FAF at appropriate altitude and began the final approach segment. Upon reaching the MDA the tower at craig gave me a 'low altitude alert, check altimeter immediately.' the altimeter indicated correct altitude (700'). I continued with the approach, saw the runway and landed. The actual WX during the approach was/appeared to me to be 100-200' scattered, 400' broken. Visibility 1 1/2 mi rain. I was unsure as to why I was given the low altitude alert at the time, and because of the actual WX I unknowingly descended below the MDA looking for the runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF SMA FREIGHTER ON IMC APCH AT APPROX MDA WAS GIVEN ALT ALERT BY TWR CTLR, PLT CONTINUED TO LNDG.
Narrative: CRAIG ATIS AT THE TIME OF THE APCH INDICATED 700' OVCST, VISIBILITY 1 1/2 MI IN RAIN. WIND NE AT 5 KTS. RECEIVED VECTORS FOR VOR 14 INTO CRAIG FIELD. CROSSED FAF AT APPROPRIATE ALT AND BEGAN THE FINAL APCH SEGMENT. UPON REACHING THE MDA THE TWR AT CRAIG GAVE ME A 'LOW ALT ALERT, CHK ALTIMETER IMMEDIATELY.' THE ALTIMETER INDICATED CORRECT ALT (700'). I CONTINUED WITH THE APCH, SAW THE RWY AND LANDED. THE ACTUAL WX DURING THE APCH WAS/APPEARED TO ME TO BE 100-200' SCATTERED, 400' BROKEN. VISIBILITY 1 1/2 MI RAIN. I WAS UNSURE AS TO WHY I WAS GIVEN THE LOW ALT ALERT AT THE TIME, AND BECAUSE OF THE ACTUAL WX I UNKNOWINGLY DSNDED BELOW THE MDA LOOKING FOR THE RWY.
