Narrative:
I was cleared to taxi from FBO on juliett taxiway via oscar taxiway and hold short ry 23L at runway 18 and oscar. Upon reaching runway 23L at 18 ground control cleared me for takeoff as I thought on runway 23L. I started to taxi onto runway 23L noticing an aircraft on final approach about a mi from T/D. The spacing wasn't correct so I immediately taxied of runway 23L back onto runway 18 at oscar intersection. I didn't clear runway 23L fast enough as it was night and txwys were hard to see. The aircraft on final approach executed a missed approach at that time. I was then promptly cleared for takeoff on runway 18 at hopkins. I had read back the clearance as cleared takeoff 23L. Apparently both the controller and I misunderstood the clearance as followed. I would have cleared the runway 23L sooner, but there was snow on the ground and the taxiway lighting made it hard to see the proper exits from the runway. Note: the whole incursion lasted about 20 seconds from the time the takeoff clearance was received and long enough that the approaching aircraft went around.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AIR TAXI ACFT CLEARED TO TACI AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY. COMPLIED. CLEARED FOR TKOF, NOTICED ACFT ON FINAL AND TAXIED CLEAR OF RWY.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED TO TAXI FROM FBO ON JULIETT TXWY VIA OSCAR TXWY AND HOLD SHORT RY 23L AT RWY 18 AND OSCAR. UPON REACHING RWY 23L AT 18 GND CTL CLRED ME FOR TKOF AS I THOUGHT ON RWY 23L. I STARTED TO TAXI ONTO RWY 23L NOTICING AN ACFT ON FINAL APCH ABOUT A MI FROM T/D. THE SPACING WASN'T CORRECT SO I IMMEDIATELY TAXIED OF RWY 23L BACK ONTO RWY 18 AT OSCAR INTXN. I DIDN'T CLR RWY 23L FAST ENOUGH AS IT WAS NIGHT AND TXWYS WERE HARD TO SEE. THE ACFT ON FINAL APCH EXECUTED A MISSED APCH AT THAT TIME. I WAS THEN PROMPTLY CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 18 AT HOPKINS. I HAD READ BACK THE CLRNC AS CLRED TKOF 23L. APPARENTLY BOTH THE CTLR AND I MISUNDERSTOOD THE CLRNC AS FOLLOWED. I WOULD HAVE CLRED THE RWY 23L SOONER, BUT THERE WAS SNOW ON THE GND AND THE TXWY LIGHTING MADE IT HARD TO SEE THE PROPER EXITS FROM THE RWY. NOTE: THE WHOLE INCURSION LASTED ABOUT 20 SECS FROM THE TIME THE TKOF CLRNC WAS RECEIVED AND LONG ENOUGH THAT THE APCHING ACFT WENT AROUND.
