Narrative:

We were given civet-2 profile to lax, runway 25L. We were level at 10000' and on a 270 degree heading (vector) by lax ARTCC. Received turn toward 'fuelr', heading 290 degree when ATC controller called 'traffic at 12 O'clock'. At same time, 'TCAS ii' called 'traffic' and showed traffic, level at 12 O'clock. TCAS ii then called 'descend, descend now', first officer flying pushed over and as we passed 9600' saw traffic go overhead at 10000', 12-1 O'clock, less than 1/4 mi. We advised ATC of our actions, then climbed back to 10000', we were sent to lax approach. Then approached and landed normally.
