Narrative:
We were cleared to taxi from north cargo to runway 4L with 1 or 2 hold shorts, which we complied with. Approaching charlie taxiway, we noticed a heavy turning from the inner taxiway onto charlie (we were on outer heading southwest; heavy was heading northeast). There was no time to do anything but continue. Heavy complained to the controller that we did not give way. Controller told heavy that he (the controller) made a mistake. The controller apparently gave the heavy instructions to taxi on the outer at charlie, but never gave us a hold short. We did not hear the apparent instructions to the heavy. Furthermore, there was no indication that the heavy was going to turn onto charlie, and then the outer, until we had entered the intersection. Our taxi speed was especially slow due to precipitation and near freezing temperatures. Similar conflicts have been avoided at logan in the past when we heard conflicting instructions and ask for clarification, or simply 'hold short' west/O being directed to. This time, neither crew picked up on a potentially dangerous situation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF HEAVY COMPLAINED THAT COMMUTER DID NOT HOLD CLEAR OF TXWY THEY WERE ON.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI FROM N CARGO TO RWY 4L WITH 1 OR 2 HOLD SHORTS, WHICH WE COMPLIED WITH. APCHING CHARLIE TXWY, WE NOTICED A HVY TURNING FROM THE INNER TXWY ONTO CHARLIE (WE WERE ON OUTER HDG SW; HVY WAS HDG NE). THERE WAS NO TIME TO DO ANYTHING BUT CONTINUE. HVY COMPLAINED TO THE CTLR THAT WE DID NOT GIVE WAY. CTLR TOLD HVY THAT HE (THE CTLR) MADE A MISTAKE. THE CTLR APPARENTLY GAVE THE HVY INSTRUCTIONS TO TAXI ON THE OUTER AT CHARLIE, BUT NEVER GAVE US A HOLD SHORT. WE DID NOT HEAR THE APPARENT INSTRUCTIONS TO THE HVY. FURTHERMORE, THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT THE HVY WAS GOING TO TURN ONTO CHARLIE, AND THEN THE OUTER, UNTIL WE HAD ENTERED THE INTXN. OUR TAXI SPD WAS ESPECIALLY SLOW DUE TO PRECIPITATION AND NEAR FREEZING TEMPS. SIMILAR CONFLICTS HAVE BEEN AVOIDED AT LOGAN IN THE PAST WHEN WE HEARD CONFLICTING INSTRUCTIONS AND ASK FOR CLARIFICATION, OR SIMPLY 'HOLD SHORT' W/O BEING DIRECTED TO. THIS TIME, NEITHER CREW PICKED UP ON A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION.
