Narrative:
We were flying midfield downwind for runway xxr when we noticed an airplane close behind via ads-B. The tower also noticed the aircraft behind us and indicated to the pilot of that aircraft that he was doing 115 kts ground speed and overtaking us. The other pilot did not react to ATC's instructions and got closer to us. As we were about to turn base; the other pilot apparently did not see us and got closer at this point. The tower told us to continue downwind after we started turning our base. The other pilot turned base slightly above and behind us and continued to perform a normal landing. We performed a normal landing thereafter.
