Narrative:
After receiving clearance from ground control, I repositioned the helicopter on the east ramp (GA area) to discharge a passenger and proceed with a demonstration flight. I switched to tower frequency and asked for takeoff clearance and on eastbound departure. I was advised to contact clearance delivery which I did and received my departure clearance. At that point I proceeded to takeoff west/O recontacting tower. I discovered the error when I called to clear for a right turn. I then contacted the tower and acknowledged the mistake and contacted the tower by phone shortly after landing. My departure path was over an infield type area. At no time did I pass over other aircraft or go onto or over a runway or taxiway. I recognize the hazard involved as I have many hours in and out of TCA's. The reason for the occurrence is obvious--rushing too much and not following the full procedure. The plan for keeping this from happening again is to take time and follow all phases of radio procedures--ATIS, clearance delivery, ground control, tower and departure.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMA HELICOPTER TKOF FROM SLC.
Narrative: AFTER RECEIVING CLRNC FROM GND CTL, I REPOSITIONED THE HELI ON THE E RAMP (GA AREA) TO DISCHARGE A PAX AND PROCEED WITH A DEMO FLT. I SWITCHED TO TWR FREQ AND ASKED FOR TKOF CLRNC AND ON EBND DEP. I WAS ADVISED TO CONTACT CLRNC DELIVERY WHICH I DID AND RECEIVED MY DEP CLRNC. AT THAT POINT I PROCEEDED TO TKOF W/O RECONTACTING TWR. I DISCOVERED THE ERROR WHEN I CALLED TO CLR FOR A RIGHT TURN. I THEN CONTACTED THE TWR AND ACKNOWLEDGED THE MISTAKE AND CONTACTED THE TWR BY PHONE SHORTLY AFTER LNDG. MY DEP PATH WAS OVER AN INFIELD TYPE AREA. AT NO TIME DID I PASS OVER OTHER ACFT OR GO ONTO OR OVER A RWY OR TXWY. I RECOGNIZE THE HAZARD INVOLVED AS I HAVE MANY HRS IN AND OUT OF TCA'S. THE REASON FOR THE OCCURRENCE IS OBVIOUS--RUSHING TOO MUCH AND NOT FOLLOWING THE FULL PROC. THE PLAN FOR KEEPING THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN IS TO TAKE TIME AND FOLLOW ALL PHASES OF RADIO PROCS--ATIS, CLRNC DELIVERY, GND CTL, TWR AND DEP.
