Narrative:
My communication/navigation panel was defective. I had no speaker. Head phones didn't work except to hear static and yoke microphone button wouldn't key. Inbound to hawthorne airport from seal beach VOR I advised hawthorne I could transmit but not receive and had them acknowledge my xmissions with a 5 count. I declared an emergency inbound from the alondra park (reporting point) I became disoriented when microphone fell out of jack. By the time I reoriented myself I was over lax. I advised hawthorne tower to advise la approach and I continued north to santa monica where I climbed and made a normal TCA crossing back to south side of lax and landed at hawthorne airport. I asked hawthorne tower to apologize to la approach. The flying safety officer of my FBO (at hawthorne) and I discussed the incident and it was agreed that a supervised night orientation flight would be a good idea, which will take place in near future, and prior to next night flight.
