Narrative:
Although VMC prevailed severe updrafts and down drafts caused altitude excursions of +/- 500' from assigned altitude from clt to loz. Also a hard landing at loz was caused when wind gust stopped at critical high angle of attack. Minor damage to tail skid resulted. Plane returned to home base for repairs.
