Narrative:
On taxi-out, had a gen field and breaker light come on. Operating manual says to disconnect CSD. We disconnected, making the gen inoperative. After takeoff, looking at MEL it said we were not allowed to placard gen inoperative. We should have read MEL on ground and taxied back in and had maintenance placard gen. Supplemental information from acn 174788: there was a great desire to continue with our on-time performance for the sequence, especially with this 'kick off' flight, and we overlooked basic written guidance.

Title: FLT CREW FAILS TO RETURN TO RAMP AFTER DISCONNECTING ONE GENERATOR CSD ON TAXI-OUT.
Narrative: ON TAXI-OUT, HAD A GEN FIELD AND BREAKER LIGHT COME ON. OPERATING MANUAL SAYS TO DISCONNECT CSD. WE DISCONNECTED, MAKING THE GEN INOP. AFTER TKOF, LOOKING AT MEL IT SAID WE WERE NOT ALLOWED TO PLACARD GEN INOP. WE SHOULD HAVE READ MEL ON GND AND TAXIED BACK IN AND HAD MAINT PLACARD GEN. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 174788: THERE WAS A GREAT DESIRE TO CONTINUE WITH OUR ON-TIME PERFORMANCE FOR THE SEQUENCE, ESPECIALLY WITH THIS 'KICK OFF' FLT, AND WE OVERLOOKED BASIC WRITTEN GUIDANCE.
