Narrative:
I heard about gca (ground controled approach) and decided to try it. 20 mi out I called sea approach for a gca to gray aaf. They asked if I had a ppr (I will find out what this means). I said no, I just wanted to land under gca, then depart for sightseeing. Upon landing, I was told that I was supposed to get prior approval. This was not mentioned in the FAA article I read. The tower at gray was nice about it, but I obviously should have researched the TCA a little more. Upon departure, I was told by gray aaf that I could change frequencys. At this point, I got the ATIS for tacoma narrows, then contacted tacoma narrows tower. I was less than 10 mi out and was reminded by the tower to make contact prior to entering the control zone. I felt I was making contact at the appropriate place. In the future, I will maneuver further away before contacting the tower. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: callback was made to see if any follow-up had occurred (none), and to counsel that ATIS information is secondary when so close to air traffic area and told to change frequency. Reporter had also discussed with his examiner and understands procedures.

Title: SMA PLT REQUEST GCA APCH. QUERIED REGARDING PPR, RESPONDS NO. CLEARED FOR APCH AND LANDS.
Narrative: I HEARD ABOUT GCA (GND CTLED APCH) AND DECIDED TO TRY IT. 20 MI OUT I CALLED SEA APCH FOR A GCA TO GRAY AAF. THEY ASKED IF I HAD A PPR (I WILL FIND OUT WHAT THIS MEANS). I SAID NO, I JUST WANTED TO LAND UNDER GCA, THEN DEPART FOR SIGHTSEEING. UPON LNDG, I WAS TOLD THAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO GET PRIOR APPROVAL. THIS WAS NOT MENTIONED IN THE FAA ARTICLE I READ. THE TWR AT GRAY WAS NICE ABOUT IT, BUT I OBVIOUSLY SHOULD HAVE RESEARCHED THE TCA A LITTLE MORE. UPON DEP, I WAS TOLD BY GRAY AAF THAT I COULD CHANGE FREQS. AT THIS POINT, I GOT THE ATIS FOR TACOMA NARROWS, THEN CONTACTED TACOMA NARROWS TWR. I WAS LESS THAN 10 MI OUT AND WAS REMINDED BY THE TWR TO MAKE CONTACT PRIOR TO ENTERING THE CTL ZONE. I FELT I WAS MAKING CONTACT AT THE APPROPRIATE PLACE. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL MANEUVER FURTHER AWAY BEFORE CONTACTING THE TWR. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: CALLBACK WAS MADE TO SEE IF ANY FOLLOW-UP HAD OCCURRED (NONE), AND TO COUNSEL THAT ATIS INFO IS SECONDARY WHEN SO CLOSE TO ATA AND TOLD TO CHANGE FREQ. RPTR HAD ALSO DISCUSSED WITH HIS EXAMINER AND UNDERSTANDS PROCS.
