Narrative:
I was the PF departing gadsden airport. Birmingham departure had cleared us to 5000' and told us to contact ZTL on 133.8. My first officer (PNF) was making the required radio call to our company in gadsden, so I was handling ATC communication at the time. ZTL established radar contact with us at 5000' and cleared us to 10000'. I specifically remember verbatim my readback: 'light transport X cleared to 1-0, 10 thousand.' a few mins later while level at 10000', center queried us as to whether we had been clearance to 9000'. I answered back that I had understood and read back '1-0, 10 thousand.' he said he thought he had cleared us to 9000' and gave us a frequency change to another ZTL sector. That new controller a few mins later gave us a phone # to call concerning a possible pilot deviation. I positive as to my readback of '1-0, 10 thousand,' and that it was unquestioned at that time. I later called the center and they said the problem had been on their end with the controller clearing me to 10000', but writing 9000' on his strip while he was also working another aircraft in our vicinity.
