Narrative:
While in an small aircraft an incident occurred. After the run up at 32 and sierra taxiway, I obtained clearance from wilmington tower, who also stated current winds, which were 320 at 20. As I copied the winds down I thought, 'good I have a straight headwind.' either I misheard the tower or the winds shifted. As I started my ground toll I noticed the aircraft drifting to the left so I applied right aileron to compensate. As my speed increased the aircraft came farther off the centerline and veered to the left. At this time I shut the throttle and applied maximum braking. Nonetheless, the aircraft left the surface of the runway, struck a taxiway sign and stopped midrwy in the grass to the left of 32. The reason for the incident was lack of adequate right rudder input to keep the aircraft straight. Solution, do crosswind landing and takeoff with an instructor.

Title: ACFT VEERS LEFT ON TKOF ROLL. TKOF ABORTED. ACFT LEAVES RWY.
Narrative: WHILE IN AN SMA AN INCIDENT OCCURRED. AFTER THE RUN UP AT 32 AND SIERRA TXWY, I OBTAINED CLRNC FROM WILMINGTON TWR, WHO ALSO STATED CURRENT WINDS, WHICH WERE 320 AT 20. AS I COPIED THE WINDS DOWN I THOUGHT, 'GOOD I HAVE A STRAIGHT HEADWIND.' EITHER I MISHEARD THE TWR OR THE WINDS SHIFTED. AS I STARTED MY GND TOLL I NOTICED THE ACFT DRIFTING TO THE L SO I APPLIED R AILERON TO COMPENSATE. AS MY SPD INCREASED THE ACFT CAME FARTHER OFF THE CTRLINE AND VEERED TO THE L. AT THIS TIME I SHUT THE THROTTLE AND APPLIED MAX BRAKING. NONETHELESS, THE ACFT LEFT THE SURFACE OF THE RWY, STRUCK A TXWY SIGN AND STOPPED MIDRWY IN THE GRASS TO THE L OF 32. THE REASON FOR THE INCIDENT WAS LACK OF ADEQUATE R RUDDER INPUT TO KEEP THE ACFT STRAIGHT. SOLUTION, DO XWIND LNDG AND TKOF WITH AN INSTRUCTOR.
