Narrative:
I was flying my small aircraft aircraft from vero beach, fl, to msp, mn, when en route we noted thunderstorm activity ahead. We were VFR on tip of a scattered cloud layer on an IFR plan. This occurred after the recent FAA a.D. Requiring this aircraft not to fly in IMC conditions. We asked approach control for an amended plan to land at peachtree while we waited out the thunderstorms. They gave us an assigned altitude of 3000' and vectored heading. We asked to change heading to avoid going through some scattered clouds. At that time there was much discussion with ATC with heading changes ATC that I flew through my assigned altitude and ended up at 2500'. At that point ATC notified me I was at 2500'. I immediately corrected. I feel the restrictions placed on the aircraft by the FAA lead to an unfamiliar situation for us and ATC which made me confused and lead to the incident.
