Narrative:
On a 3-mile final at ZZZ; [we] hit severe windshear. We had [the] flight attendants sitting down early for the potential [of] weather on arrival. [We] followed [the] flight director guidance until we were clear of [the] windshear. Upon leveling off; aircraft speed began to rapidly accelerate. To avoid a further over speed we were forced to pitch [the] nose up and climb to manage speed; despite [the] throttles being pulled back to idle. This resulted in a climb of approximately 500 ft. Above [the] assigned altitude; as best we could read during the continued violent shaking of the aircraft. We determined there were no injuries after communicating with the flight attendants and then diverted immediately to ZZZ1; our filed alternate. [The cause of the event was] windshear followed by severe turbulence.
