Narrative:
During climb from las, departure control issued traffic advisory twin small transport VFR, 12 O'clock, 13 mi, climbing to 17500', and 'next controller will advise.' we were then handed off to ZLA. They did not mention this traffic. The first officer then asked whether he should give our departure message to the company in las, and I approved. While he was on the radio with them, center called and said, 'you have traffic 400' directly above, unconfirmed.' I disengaged the autoplt and leveled off and asked for confirmation. He then advised we were clear of traffic. I looked, but never saw any traffic. We had just climbed through a scattered to broken layer. The other aircraft was apparently not on the same frequency. The incident occurred because of my complacency in assuming center would keep us advised of traffic west/O prodding, and in the distraction of discussing the departure message with the first officer. In the future, I will attempt to make such non ATC calls only in the positive control area.

Title: CLOSE PROX ACR-LGT GA-SMT SOUTHEAST OF LAS BOTH IN A CLIMB THROUGH BROKEN CLOUDS.
Narrative: DURING CLB FROM LAS, DEP CTL ISSUED TFC ADVISORY TWIN SMT VFR, 12 O'CLOCK, 13 MI, CLBING TO 17500', AND 'NEXT CTLR WILL ADVISE.' WE WERE THEN HANDED OFF TO ZLA. THEY DID NOT MENTION THIS TFC. THE F/O THEN ASKED WHETHER HE SHOULD GIVE OUR DEP MESSAGE TO THE COMPANY IN LAS, AND I APPROVED. WHILE HE WAS ON THE RADIO WITH THEM, CENTER CALLED AND SAID, 'YOU HAVE TFC 400' DIRECTLY ABOVE, UNCONFIRMED.' I DISENGAGED THE AUTOPLT AND LEVELED OFF AND ASKED FOR CONFIRMATION. HE THEN ADVISED WE WERE CLR OF TFC. I LOOKED, BUT NEVER SAW ANY TFC. WE HAD JUST CLBED THROUGH A SCATTERED TO BROKEN LAYER. THE OTHER ACFT WAS APPARENTLY NOT ON THE SAME FREQ. THE INCIDENT OCCURRED BECAUSE OF MY COMPLACENCY IN ASSUMING CENTER WOULD KEEP US ADVISED OF TFC W/O PRODDING, AND IN THE DISTR OF DISCUSSING THE DEP MESSAGE WITH THE F/O. IN THE FUTURE, I WILL ATTEMPT TO MAKE SUCH NON ATC CALLS ONLY IN THE PCA.
