Narrative:
Learned a good lesson on cockpit management. Our normal procedure is to do a descent checklist as soon as we start out of altitude. On this leg we were deviating around an area of thunderstorms with the help of memphis center and our WX radar. Our checklist we use is on our radar screen. Once we leveled off at 5000' we realized we had missed the altimeter setting at 18000'. When you are distraction from your normal routine you must be very careful not to make a simple mistake like this one! From now on we will use a paper checklist and stay with our normal procedure at all times! Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information. Reporter advised that checklist is available on the radar scope and it is a good one with no opportunity to miss an item because of a thumb etc. But checklist is biased out if radar is in storm detection mode. So a card checklist is always available in the cockpit.

CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. RPTR ADVISED THAT CHKLIST IS AVAILABLE ON THE RADAR SCOPE AND IT IS A GOOD ONE WITH NO OPPORTUNITY TO MISS AN ITEM BECAUSE OF A THUMB ETC. BUT CHKLIST IS BIASED OUT IF RADAR IS IN STORM DETECTION MODE. SO A CARD CHKLIST IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE IN THE COCKPIT.
