Narrative:

At handoff to center, southwest departure pointed traffic at 2 O'clock, 3 mi, 16.5 VFR. Cleared us to 1700'. We checked on center frequency. They reported traffic 1 O'clock. We turned south. As we begun turn we saw traffic at 1200'. We were not aware we were closing on traffic. Center or departure should vector even a VFR/IFR conflict away from each other.
