Narrative:
While executing the oxi (knox) arrival into ord, I failed to intercept the inbound right to the ord VOR and overshot the turn point. I had become distraction and didn't realize the error until I was given a heading by ord approach control. No conflict was involved. I remember noting when I had 5-6 DME to go to the turn point but then we had a frequency change. The copilot was on the #2 radio talking to company mtx about a couple of items that needed attention upon our arrival, I had some marketing (connections) information that I was passing to the F/as, etc. It is my fault for allowing myself to become distraction at a busy time. It will not happen again. It really irritates me that companies are putting more and more marketing duties on the flight crew. (Forwarding mtx calls, radios are not long range and communication has to be done close to the field, connecting passenger information). No more. We can call mtx when we get on the ground and passenger can find out the connections at the gate. With 2 man crews, we don't have time to do 'extra' duties in a high traffic environment. One other item. I had a fairly weak copilot, so I was in a position of having to doublechk everything. He had the inbound ord right dialed in on his side, but never noticed as we went right through it. I say this, not as a specific criticism of this individual, but to point out a trend in the industry run by 'bottom liners'. Pilots are hired with less experience, given less training/ sim time/ IOE and are rushed to the line. We are all expected to 'develop' on the job! This is ludicrous! We have got to spend some on training and quit just pumping people out of the system!
