Narrative:

We landed at dtw to clear customs. We landed on 21C cleared to turn right on runway 27 and to contact ground control. As we taxied directly into the sun, ground control cleared us to, 'make a right turn on oscar 6 and use the outer taxiway to customs.' my first officer read back the clearance. Ground control asked for confirmation that we understood the clrncs. I sensed something unusual in that response and I told my first officer to ask ground control for a 'progressive taxi.' but he insisted that he was familiar and told ground control that at that moment we approached 'oscar 6' and made a right turn onto it. Then we should have then made an immediate left turn onto the outer. With the sun in my eyes I didn't see the outer sign. As I crossed the outer taxiway on oscar 6, I stopped because I was facing the terminal ramp and I reminded the first officer that he is required by company SOP to have the taxi chart 'in hand.' the first officer insisted that we were heading in the direction of the outer. Ground control then informed us that we missed a turn and gave us a revised taxi clearance. The ground controller did his job professionally, but didn't take into account that even on days of good WX, pilots still may have difficulty seeing signs under certain lights conditions. I also reprimanded my first officer about not having the chart handy and by not following my instructions to ask for a 'progressive taxi,' and I continued to taxi slowly.

Title: FLT CREW OF ATX MISSED TAXI TURN AND HAD TO BE RECLEARED TO TAXI TO CUSTOMS AT DTW.

Narrative: WE LANDED AT DTW TO CLR CUSTOMS. WE LANDED ON 21C CLRED TO TURN RIGHT ON RWY 27 AND TO CONTACT GND CTL. AS WE TAXIED DIRECTLY INTO THE SUN, GND CTL CLRED US TO, 'MAKE A RIGHT TURN ON OSCAR 6 AND USE THE OUTER TXWY TO CUSTOMS.' MY F/O READ BACK THE CLRNC. GND CTL ASKED FOR CONFIRMATION THAT WE UNDERSTOOD THE CLRNCS. I SENSED SOMETHING UNUSUAL IN THAT RESPONSE AND I TOLD MY F/O TO ASK GND CTL FOR A 'PROGRESSIVE TAXI.' BUT HE INSISTED THAT HE WAS FAMILIAR AND TOLD GND CTL THAT AT THAT MOMENT WE APCHED 'OSCAR 6' AND MADE A RIGHT TURN ONTO IT. THEN WE SHOULD HAVE THEN MADE AN IMMEDIATE LEFT TURN ONTO THE OUTER. WITH THE SUN IN MY EYES I DIDN'T SEE THE OUTER SIGN. AS I CROSSED THE OUTER TXWY ON OSCAR 6, I STOPPED BECAUSE I WAS FACING THE TERMINAL RAMP AND I REMINDED THE F/O THAT HE IS REQUIRED BY COMPANY SOP TO HAVE THE TAXI CHART 'IN HAND.' THE F/O INSISTED THAT WE WERE HDG IN THE DIRECTION OF THE OUTER. GND CTL THEN INFORMED US THAT WE MISSED A TURN AND GAVE US A REVISED TAXI CLRNC. THE GND CTLR DID HIS JOB PROFESSIONALLY, BUT DIDN'T TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THAT EVEN ON DAYS OF GOOD WX, PLTS STILL MAY HAVE DIFFICULTY SEEING SIGNS UNDER CERTAIN LIGHTS CONDITIONS. I ALSO REPRIMANDED MY F/O ABOUT NOT HAVING THE CHART HANDY AND BY NOT FOLLOWING MY INSTRUCTIONS TO ASK FOR A 'PROGRESSIVE TAXI,' AND I CONTINUED TO TAXI SLOWLY.
