Narrative:

Air carrier X on ramp prior to start, per captain's instructions. I asked ground control for clearance to start engines. Ground control gave clearance to start, and I think (but I'm not positive) they might have also said, 'not cleared to taxi.' started all engines and ground marshaller was directing us to taxi forward on ramp. Captain taxiied the aircraft a short distance forward on ramp per marshaller's instructions, then ground control told us to hold position and that he had not cleared us to taxi yet. I said, 'roger, we're holding,' and 'sorry about that.' later, after taxiing toward active runway, as per ground controller's instructions, my captain picked up his microphone and, west/O identing himself or our flight # or aircraft, said to ground controller something to the effect that the marshaller, and not ground controller, had control over us while we were still on the ramp and not having yet entered a taxiway. Ground controller didn't respond much, if at all, to this, but it was obvious during the brief remainder of time under his control and last few normal interchanges with him that he was not pleased with us; he transitioned to a gruff tone of voice when talking to us. Had I to do it over again, when captain started to taxi, I, first officer, would have said that we were not cleared to taxi yet. I sensed throughout, however, that my captain was in a somewhat confrontational mood that day and he would have taxied anyway. This was also my first flight ever with this captain. I will be a captain soon, and my philosophy after 20 yrs as a professional aviator is that professionalism and discretion should always be foremost when involved with radio exchanges with ATC. Further, clarifying and expanded 'discussions' can take place later over phone while not compromising the safety and integrity of the ATC system.

Title: ACR X NON ADHERENCE TO ATC INSTRUCTION TAXIED AFTER BEING INSTRUCTED NOT TO TAXI. PLT DEVIATION.

Narrative: ACR X ON RAMP PRIOR TO START, PER CAPT'S INSTRUCTIONS. I ASKED GND CTL FOR CLRNC TO START ENGS. GND CTL GAVE CLRNC TO START, AND I THINK (BUT I'M NOT POSITIVE) THEY MIGHT HAVE ALSO SAID, 'NOT CLRED TO TAXI.' STARTED ALL ENGS AND GND MARSHALLER WAS DIRECTING US TO TAXI FORWARD ON RAMP. CAPT TAXIIED THE ACFT A SHORT DISTANCE FORWARD ON RAMP PER MARSHALLER'S INSTRUCTIONS, THEN GND CTL TOLD US TO HOLD POS AND THAT HE HAD NOT CLRED US TO TAXI YET. I SAID, 'ROGER, WE'RE HOLDING,' AND 'SORRY ABOUT THAT.' LATER, AFTER TAXIING TOWARD ACTIVE RWY, AS PER GND CTLR'S INSTRUCTIONS, MY CAPT PICKED UP HIS MIC AND, W/O IDENTING HIMSELF OR OUR FLT # OR ACFT, SAID TO GND CTLR SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT THAT THE MARSHALLER, AND NOT GND CTLR, HAD CTL OVER US WHILE WE WERE STILL ON THE RAMP AND NOT HAVING YET ENTERED A TXWY. GND CTLR DIDN'T RESPOND MUCH, IF AT ALL, TO THIS, BUT IT WAS OBVIOUS DURING THE BRIEF REMAINDER OF TIME UNDER HIS CTL AND LAST FEW NORMAL INTERCHANGES WITH HIM THAT HE WAS NOT PLEASED WITH US; HE TRANSITIONED TO A GRUFF TONE OF VOICE WHEN TALKING TO US. HAD I TO DO IT OVER AGAIN, WHEN CAPT STARTED TO TAXI, I, F/O, WOULD HAVE SAID THAT WE WERE NOT CLRED TO TAXI YET. I SENSED THROUGHOUT, HOWEVER, THAT MY CAPT WAS IN A SOMEWHAT CONFRONTATIONAL MOOD THAT DAY AND HE WOULD HAVE TAXIED ANYWAY. THIS WAS ALSO MY FIRST FLT EVER WITH THIS CAPT. I WILL BE A CAPT SOON, AND MY PHILOSOPHY AFTER 20 YRS AS A PROFESSIONAL AVIATOR IS THAT PROFESSIONALISM AND DISCRETION SHOULD ALWAYS BE FOREMOST WHEN INVOLVED WITH RADIO EXCHANGES WITH ATC. FURTHER, CLARIFYING AND EXPANDED 'DISCUSSIONS' CAN TAKE PLACE LATER OVER PHONE WHILE NOT COMPROMISING THE SAFETY AND INTEGRITY OF THE ATC SYS.
