Narrative:
I departed south lake tahoe airport on a direct flight to fny. En route I encountered WX which required a climb and ZOA cleared me to FL230. In due course I was handed off to ZLA and they handed me off to bakersfield approach. They gave me a clearance to lake hughes and descent to 9000'. They also gave me an approach that I was unfamiliar with and I told them that I did not have it. At lake hughes I intercepted the vny ILS and told bur approach of this fact. They cleared me to land at vny. I was told by bur approach that there would be a phone # for me to call on landing. I have made this approach many times and being under positive control did not feel that I was doing anything amiss. There are only 2 stars for vny, fernando 2 arrival and linxx 6 arrival. These do not seem appropriate for the shafter-lake hughes approach clearance. I feel that there should be a STAR for shafter-lake hughes-vny approach. Also bur approach should have positive radar contact with aircraft at the lake hughes VOR. Many times I have called bur approach over lake hughes and they request that I call them again 10 mi south of lake hughes.
